Look, I love Rome. I love Venice. But if you’ve been to Italy once and you’re heading back, or if you’re ready to skip the tourist gauntlet on your very first trip, Italy has a whole other side that most travelers never see. These ten destinations are stunning, culturally rich, and dramatically less crowded than the big names. Consider this your insider’s guide to the Italy that Italians actually brag about.

10 โ€” Monopoli ๐ŸŸ

Tucked along the Adriatic coast in Puglia, Monopoli is the kind of place you stumble upon and immediately wonder why no one told you about it sooner. A walled old town that spills right down to the water, a 16th-century castle perched at the harbor’s edge, and seafood so fresh you’ll be suspicious of every shrimp you eat back home. It’s charming without trying to be, which is the best kind of charming. Summer here means cooling off in the clearest turquoise water you’ve ever seen and eating your weight in orecchiette.

9 โ€” Bologna ๐Ÿ

Bologna gets a fraction of the foot traffic that Florence does, and I genuinely cannot explain why. This city is elegant, intellectual, and absolutely obsessed with food in the best possible way. As the birthplace of ragรน (yes, that ragรน), mortadella, and tortellini, it takes its culinary reputation seriously. The medieval porticoes stretch for miles, the two leaning towers are a surprisingly fun climb, and the local university keeps the energy young and lively all summer. Come hungry.

8 โ€” Turin ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

Turin often surprises people who weren’t expecting much. It’s sophisticated in a way that feels more Parisian than Italian with grand boulevards, ornate coffeehouses, incredible baroque architecture, and a chocolate culture that rivals anywhere in Europe. It’s also the gateway to the Alps, so if you want mountain scenery alongside your espresso, this is your city. The Egyptian Museum here is one of the most important outside of Cairo, which is a sentence most people don’t believe until they’re standing in front of a 3,000-year-old pharaoh.

7 โ€” Genoa ๐Ÿซ’

Genoa is Italy’s great underdog. It’s a real working port city with a labyrinthine medieval center, called the caruggi, that feels like stepping into another century. Dramatic, slightly gritty, completely authentic. The pesto here is not up for debate; Genoa invented it, and they make it better than anywhere else on earth. The palaces along Via Garibaldi are UNESCO-listed and genuinely jaw-dropping. If you want to feel like you’ve discovered somewhere, Genoa is your answer.

6 โ€” Verona ๐ŸŽญ

Yes, Romeo and Juliet were fictional, but don’t let that stop you from adoring Verona. This is one of northern Italy’s most beautiful cities, with a remarkably well-preserved Roman arena that still hosts opera performances in the summer. The pink marble buildings, the medieval bridges over the Adige River, the impossibly romantic atmosphereโ€ฆ it earns every bit of its reputation. And unlike some of the more famous Italian cities, you can actually walk around Verona and breathe. Pair it with a few nights in the surrounding wine country and you’ve got a perfect summer escape.

5 โ€” Cagliari ๐ŸŒŠ

Most people don’t think “Sardinia” when they think “Italy,” and that’s exactly why it belongs on this list. Cagliari is the island’s capital, a hilltop city with ancient ruins, a beautiful waterfront, and access to some of the most gorgeous beaches in the entire Mediterranean. The water around Sardinia is the kind of blue that looks fake in photos. The food is distinct from mainland Italian cuisine, the pace is slower, and the vibe is pure summer. If you’re looking for a beach-focused trip without the party scene of more popular islands, Cagliari delivers.

4 โ€” Sorrento ๐Ÿ‹

Sorrento is the jewel of the southern coast and, in my opinion, one of the most strategically perfect base camps in all of Italy. Perched on cliffs above the Bay of Naples, it gives you easy access to Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and Positano while being significantly more manageable (and more affordable) than trying to stay on the Amalfi Coast itself. Lemon groves perfume the air, the limoncello is made right here, and the views of Vesuvius across the bay never get old. Summer evenings on the terrace with a glass of local wine? That’s the Italy people are chasing.

3 โ€” Ravello ๐ŸŒบ

Ravello sits above the Amalfi Coast on a ridge so high it feels like you’re floating above Italy. This is the most romantic, otherworldly spot on a coastline full of competition. The Villa Rufolo gardens, the historic music festival, the views that stretch forever over the Tyrrhenian Seaโ€ฆ Ravello doesn’t rush. It doesn’t need to. It’s small, quiet, and completely extraordinary. If you’re honeymooning, celebrating a milestone, or simply done fighting for a spot at the beach, this is where you come.

2 โ€” Bergamo ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ

Bergamo is a tale of two cities โ€” literally. The lower modern city is perfectly pleasant, but it’s the Upper City (Cittร  Alta) that will stop you cold. Accessed by a historic funicular, the walled hilltop town is medieval perfection: cobblestones, ancient churches, Renaissance palaces, and sweeping views of the Lombardy plains below. It sits close enough to Milan that it’s easy to combine with a bigger city stay, but it has an identity completely its own. Less than an hour from Lake Como if you’re mapping out northern Italy. An absolute must.

1 โ€” Matera ๐Ÿชจ

Matera is unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been, and I’ve been a lot of places. Carved into a ravine in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, this ancient city of cave dwellings which are called sassi has been continuously inhabited for more than 9,000 years. It’s one of the oldest settlements on earth, and it looks like something out of a biblical epic (no coincidence โ€” several films have been shot here). In summer, the golden stone glows in the evening light in a way that’s almost impossible to describe. It’s dramatic, haunting, and deeply beautiful. Matera was the European Capital of Culture in 2019 and still hasn’t been overrun by tourists the way it deserves to be. Get there before that changes.

Ready to See the Real Italy?
These aren’t the destinations that show up in every “Italy in 10 Days” blog post and that’s exactly the point. Whether you’re dreaming of Amalfi cliffs, Pugliese beaches, northern mountain towns, or an ancient cave city unlike anything you’ve imagined, there’s an Italy waiting for you beyond the postcard version.

Not sure where to start building your itinerary? That’s what I’m here for. Let’s put together something smart, beautiful, and completely tailored to you.
